Riptides:
Riptides
Miami Riptides Aquatics received a grant from Speedo for $500 to do some grassroots marketing and get
water polo exposed to more Miamians. The Riptides thought up a plan to advertise and host a free clinic
that would be offered to anyone interested.
On September 8, 2007, the Riptides opened up their pool to inexperienced water polo hopefuls in their
area, bringing in over fifty new faces. The athletes ranged from as young as four years old up to
seventeen years old. Carroll Vaughan and Christopher Arias, the two head coaches for Riptides, ran the
clinic. They divided the pool up into stations and posted high school and collegiate athletes throughout.
The youngest kids, eight and under, started out in the shallow end with two portable miniature soccer
goals on the deck. The youngsters went over the basic fundamentals of water polo with coaches;
swimming, treading, passing, catching and shooting. They ran some simple drills and by the end of the
day were able to put together a few dry passes in a row followed by a shot. The day finished up with this
group playing on the shoulders of older athletes in the main pool. Both age groups enjoyed this
thoroughly.
With the next age group, ages eight through twelve, two different goals were used, one with an
experienced goalie and one with a sniper. After going over the basic fundamentals of the game, coaches
went into more detail of passing and catching with one hand, the correct body positioning and balancing
out in the pool. By the end of the day this group of kids split up to scrimmage against each other.
With the oldest age group, they went over treading and some of the basics, but mostly this group worked
with experienced athletes and two assistant coaches, Chase Vaughan and Andy Alvarez, on catching,
proper passes and many different types of shots. They also did dry land and chalkboard tactics on the
deck. They ended the day with a scrimmage mixed in with experienced athletes.
Miami Riptides provided lunch and refreshments to all of the athletes and their parents. The athletes and
parents that attended were all very impressed, so much so that the club plans on doing this same thing
about three times a year. All in all, it was a huge success and there are families out there who now know
about the great sport of water polo that didn’t before.
